Ka·kin Group Ltd. Expands Economic Footprint with Acquisition of Land and Building in Sparwood, B.C.

GRASMERE, British Columbia, October 8th, 2024 – Ka∙kin Group Ltd., the wholly-owned economic development arm of Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation (‘Tobacco Plains First Nation), announces its acquisition of land and a commercial facility located at 749 Douglas Fir Road in Sparwood, B.C. This significant move underscores Ka∙kin’s commitment to establishing a permanent presence and actively participating in the broader regional economy.

Situated on a 13-acre parcel, the property was strategically identified to cater to Ka∙kin’s diverse operational and growth needs. The facility boasts over 30,000 square feet of versatile office, shop, and commercial spaces. Its proximity to the Crowsnest Highway not only enhances accessibility for new businesses but also establishes tangible operations for Ka∙kin along a crucial corridor supporting major localized industries.

Functioning as Ka∙kin’s headquarters for day-to-day operational activities, the facility will also serve as the hub for the organization’s business ventures and partners. These include ready to move home construction, warehousing, welding, hydrovac services, and other collaborative projects with Ka∙kin’s key alliance partners and owned entities. Moreover, the shop and yard spaces will be made available for lease to regional businesses, including EVR, which has already begun utilizing the premises during the construction of a new permanent office in Sparwood.

Nasuʔkin Heidi Gravelle of Yaqit ?a·knuqli‘it First Nation remarked, “This acquisition is pivotal in elevating our visibility and presence beyond the confines of our reserve. It symbolizes our commitment to forging robust working relationships with our counterparts and establishing a meaningful foothold in the regional economy throughout our traditional territory.” She continued, “Having an active presence, having our image out there, having our people there – provides that presence. This enhances our connection to that part of the territory.”

Councillor Kyle Shottanana comments, “For the longest time, Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation had no recognition or people knowing that we were the stewards, or even part of that land, so the building is all a part of that relationship building with communities in the area.”

“The significance of the Ka∙kin building is that it’s the entryway into our territory,” stated Councillor Garrett Gravelle. “It means a lot to have our name present.”

“I’m thrilled to announce this acquisition, which represents a significant leap forward for the organization and the community we serve,” conveyed Trent Fequet, CEO of Ka∙kin Group of Companies. “This milestone is a testament to our dedication to fostering growth, creating jobs, and contributing to the sustainability of Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation and the Qukin ɁamakɁis (Elk Valley) today and into the future. I also want to express our gratitude to the Columbia Basin Trust for their commitment to the growth of the Ka∙kin Group of Companies by providing financing, and to the District of Sparwood for their collaboration in the startup of our operations. Additionally, EVR was a critical partner in supporting the purchase of the land and building as part of ongoing efforts to proactively collaborate towards economic reconciliation and mutual beneficial development opportunities.”

This endeavor furthers Ka∙kin’s mandate to actively lead dialogue in regional economies, collaborate with key partners, create ownership opportunities, and partake in developmental endeavors aligned with the organization’s and Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation’s enduring vision and values.

“Ka∙kin’s investment in Sparwood will bring much-needed building capacity for the entire region while advancing the innovative business interests of Ka∙kin and YQT,” said Mike Carrucan, CEO, EVR. “We look forward to continued collaboration and engagement with Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation, working together to create a vibrant future for people and communities.”

With the property fully operational and open for business, Ka∙kin is excited to welcome members, businesses, and other First Nations and economic development organizations of the region for the opportunity to collaborate. Keep an eye out for our upcoming announcement, steeped in the traditions of our culture, as we unveil the building’s name and commemorate this moment with a ceremony.
